  • Salary Range: $26–28/hour, based upon experience
    (This position is part of our future hiring plan, with openings expected to begin in late May or early June 2026)

Position Summary:

The Credible Messenger (CM) is a frontline, relationship-centered role responsible for providing consistent mentorship, support, and guidance to residents of the Safe Healing Center. Credible Messengers draw from lived experience, cultural humility, and trauma-informed practice to build trust, model accountability, and support residents in achieving personal, educational, vocational, and behavioral goals.

The Credible Messenger plays a critical role in maintaining a safe, supportive, and healing-centered environment while reinforcing program expectations, restorative practices, and positive community norms.


Core Responsibilities

Resident Engagement & Support

  • * Build authentic, trusting relationships with residents through consistent presence and engagement.
  • * Provide one-on-one mentorship, coaching, and informal counseling support.
  • * Model positive decision-making, conflict resolution, and emotional regulation.
  • * Support residents in developing life skills, goal setting, and accountability.
  • * Encourage participation in education, employment, treatment, and pro-social activities.

Safety, Supervision & Environment

  • * Maintain active supervision of residents during assigned shifts.
  • * Ensure adherence to program rules, curfews, schedules, and expectations.
  • * De-escalate conflicts using trauma-informed and restorative approaches.
  • * Support crisis intervention efforts in coordination with supervisors and clinicians.
  • * Conduct room checks, head counts, and safety walkthroughs as required.

Restorative & Healing-Centered Practices

  • * Facilitate or support restorative conversations and circles when appropriate.
  • * Reinforce a culture of respect, responsibility, and community healing.
  • * Support residents in understanding the impact of their choices.
  • * Collaborate with clinical and case management staff to reinforce treatment goals.

Documentation & Communication

  • * Accurately document resident interactions, incidents, and shift activities.
  • * Complete required logs, reports, and case notes in a timely manner.
  • * Communicate concerns, progress, and incidents to supervisors and the multidisciplinary team.
  • * Participate in team meetings, case conferences, and supervision sessions.

Collaboration & Professional Conduct

  • * Work collaboratively with Case Managers, Housing Managers, Clinicians, and leadership.
  • * Maintain professional boundaries while remaining relatable and supportive.
  • * Uphold confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and program policies.
  • * Represent the program with professionalism and integrity.

Required Qualifications

  • * Lived experience relevant to the population served (justice-impacted, system-involved, or community violence impacted).
  • * Valid California Driver’s License, reliable vehicle, and current auto insurance coverage.
  • * High school diploma or GED required.
  • * Demonstrated ability to build rapport with transitional-age youth and young adults.
  • * Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • * Ability to remain calm and effective in high-stress situations.
  • * Willingness to work flexible schedules, including evenings and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications

  • * Prior experience as a Credible Messenger, mentor, peer support specialist, or youth advocate.
  • * Experience working in residential, reentry, or supportive housing settings.
  • * Knowledge of trauma-informed care, restorative justice, and healing-centered engagement.
  • * CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • * Bilingual or multilingual skills preferred.

Training & Compliance Requirements

  • * Completion of DYD-mandated and SHC-required trainings.
  • * Trauma-Informed Care and De-escalation Training.
  • * Crisis Intervention and Safety Training.
  • * Mandated Reporter Training.
  • * Background clearance and TB testing as required by county and program standards.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

  • * Ability to remain on feet for extended periods.
  • * Ability to respond quickly to emergencies.
  • * Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • * Work in a residential setting with youth and young adults.
