Job Title: Family Reunification Attorneys (2 Open Positions – Direct Services and Public Policy)

Reports to: Co-Director / Family Reunification Program

Supervise: Legal Externs, Social Workers

Status: Exempt


The Family Reunification Attorneys will work in the Family Reunification Department of A New Way of Life Reentry Project (ANWOL) with the goal of reuniting formerly incarcerated parents with their children by providing direct representation in California’s family courts and probate courts, as well as providing direct and/or supportive representation in dependency court proceedings. In addition, the Attorney may contribute to civil rights impact litigation, family reunification local, state, and federal policy work, and family reunification legal clinics planned to occur in prisons in Los Angeles County.


Currently, there are two open positions geared toward those with 3 to 5 years of experience, although others will be considered. The positions will be based in our Montebello, CA office.


Primary Tasks:


Direct Pro Bono Representation in Family and Probate Court:

  • File or respond to requests for court orders and other filings in California Family Courts on behalf of previously incarcerated parents in order to pursue additional physical or legal custody rights and/or visitation
  • File and prosecute petitions to terminate guardianship on behalf of previously incarcerated parents or defend against petitions to appoint guardians in California Probate Court
  • Appear at hearings on behalf of previously incarcerated parents in Southern California counties
  • Conduct client interviews, collect evidence, and develop materials related to cases


Dependency Court Work:

  • Supervise our direct pro bono representation of previously incarcerated parents involved in dependency court actions at Edelman Children’s Court
  • Advise clients on completing case plans and navigating dependency court proceedings
  • Assist in coordinating social services, conferring with appointed attorneys and social workers, and obtaining support letters from social service providers
  • Coordinate with ANWOL social workers regarding housing, social services referrals, counseling, visitation monitoring, or other services that may support a client’s reunification
  • Conduct client interviews, collect evidence, and develop materials related to cases
  • Help parents with terminated parental rights form post-adoption contact agreements
  • Assist with the launch of a family reunification legal clinic at Century Regional Detention Facility


Policy Work:

  • Form or maintain relationships with other stakeholders and key policymakers
  • Advocate for the change of state and federal laws that deprive parents of their civil rights and due process, including the federal Adoption and Safe Families Act
  • Assist with organizing political summits
  • Help to expand our family reunification model to reentry homes in other states



  • J.D. and admission to the California bar
  • Preferably, 3-5 years of experience (1) practicing in Los Angeles dependency court or (2) practicing in the area of federal public policy, regulations, and government affairs
  • 3-5 years of experience practicing litigation in California, particularly in family courts, probate courts, or criminal restraining order hearings, also strongly considered
  • Understanding of the population to be served
  • Ability to maintain accurate and organized records
  • Strong communication, logic, and problem-solving skills
  • Self-motivated and able to set priorities and manage a variety of tasks
  • Regular access to a personal vehicle; some travel to local courts required
  • Formerly incarcerated individuals or individuals impacted by the criminal justice or child welfare systems are encouraged to apply
